Unreal Tournament

Concept and Storyline
"In 2291, in an attempt to control violence among deep space miners, the New Earth Government legalized no-holds-barred fighting. Liandri Mining Corporation, working with the NEG, established a series of leagues and bloody public exhibitions. The fight's popularity grew with their brutality. Soon, Liandri discovered that the public matches were their most profitable enterprise. The professional league was formed; a cabal of the most violent and skilled warriors in known space, selected to fight in a Grand Tournament. Now it is 2341. 50 years have passed since founding of DeathMatch. Profits from the Tournament number in the hundreds of billions. You have been selected to fight in the professional league by the Liandri Rules Board. Your strength and brutality are legendary. The time has come to prove you are the best. To crush your enemies; to win the Tournament." { From the game video introduction. }

This is a first person shooter that can be player in single player versus "bots" mission oriented games, multiplayer deathmatch or cooperative mode games. "Bots" is short for robots and are game characters driven by game AI.

Spatial Arena
There are many different spatial arenas from distant moons orbiting distant planets, a spaceship flying through hyperspace to city sky scrappers and heavily fortified fortresses. My favourite is orbiting above the Earth.

Goal
In deathmatch mode generally kill everyone in sight before they kill you with awesome weapons that go bang in the night. The rocket launcher is one of my particular favourites.

Core Game Mechanic
Dodge and move using a combination of mouse and keyboard and keep firing at whatever gets in you way.

Challenge
Human players are the most devious opposition as their tactics always evolve to counter yours. "Bots" can be set to inhuman levels of skill for those masochistic enough to try and beat them at this level or if just for honing your skill set.

Overall Impression
This is a great FPS game. The sound effects are fantastic and this adds to the immersion in the game. The explosions when you blow things up and get blown up are good too. Multiplayer team matches are extremely tactical and truly enjoyable when having a LAN party. To win a deathmatch is legendary and to win regularly places you on a pedastal above the unwashed. The game is responsiveness and the physics makes the game enjoyable, playable and challenging and as the difficulty increases.

My Rating
15 out of 10 stars. (Yep it is still that good.)
